Happiness

I’ve given some thought to the whole concept of happiness, and come to some personal conclusions.  For me, the things that bring me happiness are fairly simple.  It took me far too long to figure out that “things” don’t bring me happiness.  I spent too many years thinking that a cooler car, a bigger house, a nifty new gadget was what I needed to have to be happy.  Wrong.  I don’t claim to have the secret to happiness for all people, but if I get someone out there thinking about how to achieve it in a new way then I won’t have wasted time and bandwidth.   Simple things bring me joy.  A snuggle from my wife, niece or nephew.  A snuggle from one of my dogs.  When someone pays me a sincere compliment on something I’ve worked hard to accomplish.  When I get to spend a day or two outdoors enjoying just being out in nature.  When I am successful accomplishing something I’ve never tried to do before.  A simple email or phone call from someone I haven’t heard from in a long time.  When I am able to do something thoughtful and unexpected for someone and it brings them joy.  A good cold beer after a day of hot yard work.  Happiness isn’t a destination, it is the journey.

On this, the day before Valentine’s day, bear in mind that there is no perfect gift.  People just want to be appreciated.  Make sure your significant other knows you appreciate them, and convey it in a heartfelt manner.  That is a gift everyone loves.

I’d love to know what it is that makes you happy.  Leave a comment and maybe others can learn a new way to have just a little more joy in their life.

Happy Valentine’s Day.
